Scheuermanss’s Disease

Scheuermann’s Disease is a developmental disorder in the spine.  It is also known as Juvenile osteochondrosis of the spine and Calvé disease. 

Scheuermann’s Disease causes the abnormal growth of usually the upper back (thoracic spine), but it can also be found in the lumber spine.

With Scheuermann’s Disease one side of the disc grows normally and the front grows more slowly or abnormally.  This leads to a disc (vertebrae) with a distinct shape.  This leads to increased dorsal Kyphosis.

The cause for Scheuermann’s Disease is unknown but it appears to be multifactorial

Scheuermann’s disease cause upper back pain and lead to an increased thoracic kyphosis.

Scheuermann’s disease is diagnosed with an X-Ray or MRI Scan.

Treating Scheuermann’s disease:

Stage 1 – treating pain and inflammation with ice and physiotherapy.

Stage 2 – Improving range of movement and strength with Biokinetics

Stage 3 – Returning to full function and following a maintenance program
