Crohn’s Disease and Exercise

Not all chronic diseases, that people suffer with every day, can be seen by the outside world. One of these diseases/conditions can be seen as Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation of the digestive-tract. This chronic inflammation can occur at different areas of the digestive-tract in different people and cause a variety of different symptoms affecting individuals differently.

Some of the physical symptoms that Crohn’s patients suffer with are:

  • Severe chronic abdominal pain
  • Severe chronic diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Severe and sudden weight-loss
  • Malnutrition

There is currently no cure for this painful and debilitating disease but all we can do is help the patients treat their symptoms.

As Biokineticists we deal with a variety of chronic disease patients and although we cannot cure any of them with exercise alone, exercise does often relieve some of the symptoms that these individuals suffer from. With Crohn’s disease patients it is very important that they check with their specialists before starting any new exercise routine or training schedule. These patients have to listen to their own bodies as many of the symptoms cannot be seen by their biokineticists or trainer. Correctly exercising and listening to their bodies, Crohn’s disease patients can have the following physical health benefits from exercise:

  • Increase in energy levels
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Increase in digestive-tract working more efficiently
  • Increase in balance and muscle strength.

Crohn’s patients also are more prone to osteoporosis due to the medication that is used as well as the disease itself. Doing the correct and appropriate can help prevent osteoporosis as well as reducing the progression of osteoporosis.

Along with many physical health benefits of exercising, many of the Crohn’s disease patients often suffer with depression. Exercising helps release hormones which can reduce stress and increase mood. Stress often aggravates the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and by reducing stress that can offer some welcomed relief to the patients. Exercising regularly can aid in the releasing of hormones that can reduce stress and increase energy and mood.
